What Claude for Small Business means for owners
Anthropic built the tool. Here is what happened when I turned it on, and the part nobody is going to set up for you
I saw the headline and, I'm not going to lie, fear hit my bones for a second. "Anthropic launches Claude for Small Business."
So did Claude just put me out of business? No. Man, it did the opposite. But you need to understand why, because it's the same reason a lot of owners are going to install this thing, hit one snag, and go right back to their Excel spreadsheet.
Let me show you what it is, what happened when I tested it live, and what it actually means for you.
What Anthropic actually launched
Claude for Small Business is a package of connectors and ready-to-run workflows that put Claude inside the tools small businesses already use. It's a plugin. You toggle it on and Claude starts acting like a business operating system.
When I recorded this in May, here's what was in the box:
- 15 ready-to-run agentic workflows across finance, operations, sales, marketing, HR and customer service
- 15 skills built on repeatable tasks, things like planning payroll
- Connectors to tools like QuickBooks, PayPal, HubSpot, DocuSign and Google Workspace
They also partnered with PayPal on a small business class, set up a small business tour starting May 14th in Chicago, and put out an AI fluency course that runs about ten hours.
To turn it on, open Claude, go to Customize, then Browse Plugins, and pick Small Business. Install it, choose a task, run it.
That's good. I like it. I think it's innovative. Now watch what happened when I used it.
What happened when I ran it
I enabled the plugin and ran the business pulse, right there on camera, on my own business.
It kept going after QuickBooks. Over and over. Problem is, my money runs through Stripe. I had Stripe connected to my Claude. But the built-in workflow wasn't using that connector. It went looking for QuickBooks, and what it told me was that my QuickBooks had been canceled before any money was ever put in. True. Also useless.
It did pick up my calendar. It knew I had a call that day and another one the next. So it's pretty good, if it's connected to the right stuff.
Now think about the average owner. Not everybody has QuickBooks. QuickBooks is a whole other subscription. So if your money lives somewhere else, this thing can look in the wrong place and hand you a summary of nothing.
And here's what most owners will do at that point. They see one little mess up, it doesn't give them what they wanted, and they say, "All right, I'm going back to my spreadsheet."
The questions nobody is answering for you
These are the little things that decide whether the tool works for you or not:
- Which connector is it actually reading? Connecting Stripe to Claude doesn't mean the small business workflow will use it.
- Where does it run? The directions were all for Cowork. In my experience Cowork is not as strong as Claude Code. Does the plugin work as well in Code? I didn't know, because Cowork was the only place they showed it.
- Which model are you on? When I recorded this, I wasn't happy with Opus 4.7. Switch to Opus 4.6 and it still did the job. Does the common person know to switch models? No.
Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, they come out with these awesome tools. But they're not coming into your shop step by step to show you how to use them. They hand you a plugin and a ten-hour course. If you're running a business, do you have ten hours?
Don't put your whole business on one AI company
One more thing I told my audience, and I still stand on it. Spread it out. A little on Claude, a little on Codex. When I recorded this, I wasn't running my own consulting work on Claude. I was running it on Codex, because I wanted a model I could put my trust in that month.
Why does that matter? Because you don't want to be in a position where one AI company decides to change something and your whole business is cooked. That has happened to a lot of people.
And none of this is as smart as a human. It's a tool. A really good one.
So what does this mean for you
Claude for Small Business made my job easier, not harder. Now when I sit with an owner and it fits them, I know how to set it up, which connectors to point it at, and where it falls short.
Here's a receipt. There's an HVAC owner I work with, still a paying customer. When I set him up, I rolled a Claude subscription right into his plan. Not just so everything gets done for him, but so he has a lane to learn AI himself. It's an important skill, and a YouTube tutorial alone is not going to get you there. You need a person who has been in it.
So ask yourself the real question. Do you want to learn how to do it all yourself, or do you want somebody to handle it with you and teach you as you go?
If it's the second one, that's what the RMDW Program is for: a mentor every week and the RMDW team putting your AI to work with you, with the plugins and connectors pointed at the right places from day one.
Did Claude put me out of business? No, man. They just made the tool better. Somebody still has to plug it in.
